Sony demonstrates world’s first commercially available 4K resolution projector for a new era of digital cinema
SRX-R110 and SRX-R105 deliver high resolution visual for digital cinema and large venue entertainment
Sony is heading into the Bangkok Film Festival following a successful unveiling of the market-ready version of its digital cinema SXRD™ (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) 4K projector. The SRX-R110 and SRX-R105 ultra high resolution projectors achieve an extraordinary 4K image resolution (4096 x 2160 pixels) that is more than 4 times of HDTV. Sony’s all-new large-venue projectors Powered by Sony revolutionary SXRD (Silicon Crystal Reflective Display) panel technology, the SRX series produces higher-level resolution, contrast, and response speed than ever before. The SRX-R110 and SRX-R105 projectors are tailored with stunning features and picture performance to address the quality-critical demands in Digital Cinema (D-Cinema) applications and other large-venue systems. The SRX projectors offer the first 4K pixel resolution per color, over four times that of High Definition Television (HDTV); this levels of resolution meets the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) System Specification standards for digital cinema image quality. The SRX-R110 and the SRX-R105 offer a high contrast ratio of more than 1800:1. Besides, the SRX-R110 provides a high brightness of 10,000 ANSI Lumens and the SRX-R105 a brightness of 5,000 ANSI lumens. In addition to high performance, the SRX-R110 and SRX-R105 are compact, enabling ease of installation in almost any type of facility. The SXRD imaging panel used in the SRX-R110 and SRX-R105 can be driven in single-mode, dual-mode, and quad-mode projection. In quad mode, four screens of full DC-SDI or HD images (2048 x 1080 or 1920 x 1080 pixels) can be projected simultaneously. In single mode, the projector will display a 4096 x 2160-pixel image either native 4K (with four interface boards) or from a single 2K source (e.g. HD) which is internally up converted for 4K display. In this case the four input slots are treated as four separate inputs, allowing multiple sources to be used. For D-Cinema applications, we can use an optional media-block security function or 3rd party D-Cinema server to enable digital content to be securely projected onto screens according to the DCI compression and encryption standard. “Thanks to concerted industry efforts ? like the DCI initiative, of which Sony is an active member ? all-digital cinema is fast becoming a commercial reality,” remarked Mr. Yasushi Yamamoto, General Manager, Content Creation Marketing Operation, Broadcast & Professional Products Asia Company, a division of Sony Corporation of Hong Kong Ltd. The new projectors are designed for digital cinema, post-production, simulation room, museum, staging, and other markets requiring ultra-high resolution allowing audiences to enjoy high definition images on the big screen with unprecedented quality, depth and emotional impact. Digital cinema has truly come to age Sony first showcased the SXRD technology's capability of displaying intricately detailed images at extremely high resolution in NAB 2005. In response to the world trend of digital cinema initiatives, Sony also demonstrated the world’s first commercially available projector to the customers in Asia such as Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea and Thailand. "We are very gratified by the reaction of the entertainment community," said Mr. Yamamoto. "The industry response confirms our belief that 4K technology presents a distinct advantage for the theatrical exhibition community. The Sony projector made its Asian theatrical debut in a premier screening of the “Saraband” by Ingmar Bergman a famous Swedish film director at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival in November 2005. The Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival is the most renowned film festival that gathered many filmmakers in Asia. We also utilized this opportunity to showcase the 4K footage of “Mystic India”, added Mr Yamamoto. Bangkok Film Festival ? February 17- 27, 2006 In parallel with the industry initiatives, Sony is pleased to support the Cinematographer’s Day, the leading 3-day event (February 23-25) at Bangkok Film Festival. Audience can experience the extraordinary 4K image resolution brought by Sony’s SXRD screening that addresses the quality-critical demands in Digital Cinema applications and other large-venue systems.
