This is the second part of a two-part series about Digital Cinema. To read the first part, "Digital Cinema: Moviemaking goes digital," click here. Peek into any theater ? or living room ? and it will be clear from faces in the audience that movies are more exciting, more engaging than ever. ![]() It wasn't just that Dykstra and his team figured out how to get a camera to swing down Wall Street as if it were Spider-Man on his web. They figured out a way to combine geometry, speed, camera position, Spider-Man's posture, and the cityscape background-all as the shot was composed-"to create an emotional effect," Dykstra says. As movie-makers continue to develop their digital skills and explore this new realm of digital technology, movie-goers have also come to expect more from the big screen. Audiences demand high quality image and sound systems that reproduce movies exactly the way that their creators intended them to be seen. NEC is responding by rolling out end-to-end Digital Cinema solutions. The NEC STARUS Digital Cinema system is the first and only complete solution for distributing, downloading, managing and presenting multiple digital films simultaneously. NEC’s Digital Cinema solutions are built on the company’s expertise in high-speed networking, fault tolerant servers, and software technology such as data compression and encryption. In the NEC STARUS Digital Cinema system, content moves across optical and satellite networks to the fully redundant servers that feed the DLP Cinema™ projectors in theaters. ![]() Much of the technology that brings Digital Cinema to local theaters is also heading for our living rooms. Digital media and broadband connectivity are on the rise, helping to accelerate the migration of home entertainment media away from analog. Reproducing the Digital Cinema experience in a home theater might be "a pricey proposition" at the moment, Dykstra says, but he expects costs to fall dramatically. The next generation of home media servers and home networking, plus new media formats like HD DVD, will help bring about more affordable, high quality home systems, he says. The future also promises more excitement and more opportunities for both consumers and the movie industry. People who grew up with video games and PCs will tap the potential of emerging digital technologies and tools in ways that we can hardly imagine. Higher quality and lower costs for movie making and distribution enables more people around the world to tell and share their stories. A wider variety of movie choices and new distribution channels such as Internet streaming promise to attract larger audiences and boost market growth. "What's going to be interesting is what digital will be able to do that film can't do," Dykstra says. "And we don't know yet exactly what that means." One thing, however, remains certain: The future of entertainment will be built on digital technology. NEC, with its proven background in high-end computing and networking is one of a few select technology companies that can offer a total Digital Cinema solution for theaters and homes. NEC continues to strive for technology and solutions that make the dreams of today the reality of tomorrow. |
