NATOReleasesDigitalCinemaRequirements
TodaytheNationalAssociationofTheatreOwners(NATO)releasedversion1.0ofitsDigitalCinemaSystemRequirements,
detailingexhibitionsystemrequirementsforusebydigitalcinemaproductdevelopersandsystemproviders.
TheinformationreleasedtodayprovidessupplementalrequirementstothoseexpressedbyDigitalCinemaInitiatives(DCI)
initsDigitalCinemaSystemSpecificationofJuly2005.TheNATODigitalCinemaSystemRequirementsarealsotargetedat
standardsbodiessuchastheSocietyofMotionPictureandTelevisionEngineers(SMPTE)initsongoingefforttogenerate
standardsfordigitalcinema,aswellasanyorganizationsthatmayengageincertificationefforts.
TheNATODigitalCinemaSystemRequirementsdocumentwascreatedbyexhibitormembersofNATO’sTechnologyCommittee,inconjunctionwithNATO’sDigitalCinemaConsultant,MichaelKaragosianofMKPEConsulting.TheRequirementsarepartofanongoingeffortwithin
NATOtoeducatethoseinvolvedinthecreationofdigitalcinemaequipmentandstandardsabouttheneedsofexhibitors.
NATO’sPresidentandCEO,JohnFithian,statedthefollowingtoday:
“WearepleasedtoreleaseNATO’sDigitalCinemaSystemRequirementstoday.NATOfullysupportedthereleaseofDCI’ssystemspecificationlastsummer,aswellastheongoingeffortatSMPTE.OurmemberssimplyfeltthattheDCI
specificationleftopensomequestionsofimportancetoexhibitors.OurRequirementsareintendedanddesignedtobe
supplementaltotheworkofDCI,andtoprovideassistancetoSMPTEandotherorganizations.”
